Math:
3M - We have been working on geometry with 2D and 3D shapes. We have learned how to measure an angle. We will be testing on our geometry unit next Wednesday.

3-O - We have been using a protractor to measure angles. We are learning different strategies to help us with long division. We will also have a test next Wednesday. Keep working on our study guide that is due on January 31st.

Literacy:
We have been practicing for Illinois Standard Achievement Test (ISATs). We have been working on reading extended response. We looked at examples and then critiqued the ones we wrote using the friendly rubric. We have also immersed ourselves reading different persuasive books. Next week we will try to write our own!

Science:
During science this week, we have been focusing on Bones and Muscles. Today we did an experiment using popsicle sticks to see what it would be like to not have any joints in our hands. We realized how difficult it would be if we did not have any joints in our bodies.

Computer Lab:
We have been visiting the Rocking the ISAT blog and practicing different activities. http://rockingtheisat.blogspot.com/

Gingerbread Houses

A big thank you to all of our 3M parents for sending in the ingredients for the gingerbread houses. A special thanks to Mr. Aiello, Mrs. Sethi, Mrs. Sanchez, Ms. Hill, and Mrs. Agrawal for helping us every time one of our houses fell apart. We could not have done it without everyone's help. Ms. Harms, thank you for doing a great job getting all of our volunteers.

Gingerbread Ingredients

Just a reminder that we will be making gingerbread houses on Monday, December 19th. If you have not sent in your supplies for the gingerbread houses yet and an adult size shoe box, please send it in by tomorrow.

3M Math - This week we finished our measurement unit, took a test, and have now begun our multiplication/division unit. We will continue to focus on measurement.

3-O Math - This week we took a test on unit 3 and have begun our unit on decimals. We have continued to learn more about multiplication and division. We have been working on our enrichment packet for when we are done with our work.

Language Arts:
Writing - We have immersed ourselves in different personal narrative books and are now beginning to write ours. We can bring in pictures to help us remember our memory. We played a game called I have Who has using synonyms and compound words.

Reading - We have been reading Turtle Bay inside our reading books. We focused on Author's Purpose and even played a sorting game. We will be writing our first extended response to go along with Turtle Bay.

LMC - Mrs. Ory talked to us about searching a few websites in Naperville. For example the Visit Naperville website, Naperville Public Library website, Chamber of Commerce website. We looked for answers to Mrs. Ory's questions.

Science - We have begun our unit on Matter. We learned that everything is matter because they are either a solid, liquid, or gas. We also reviewed the water cycle. We did our first experiment today. We mixed up water, oil, and syrup. We did not get to complete it today, but can't wait to see what happened.

News from Mrs. McClung:

Don't forget that we will be having parent teacher conferences on Wednesday from 4:30 - 8:00 and Thursday from 8-3 and 4:30 - 8. We will not be in school on Friday, November 10th. Next week we will not be having a spelling test.

Literacy: This week we read Officer Buckle and Gloria. We thought it was a good story and was funny. We began our different reading centers this week. We enjoyed our reading centers this week and can't wait to do it again. During writing, we have begun to write paragraphs and sticking to the main idea. We also have enjoyed writing our own stories during Writer's Workshop.

Math:

3M - We have been using different diagrams to help us with story problems. We learned different strategies for adding and subtracting. We are continuing to work on ballpark estimates. Next week we will take our test on Thursday for unit 2 and begin unit 3.

3-O - We have been learning different strategies for subtraction. We learned how to play new games made out of paper. Ask me about Polygon Pair Up! We took our test today and will begin unit 3 next week!

Social Studies - We will begin social studies next week and we will be focusing on Communities!

Science- We have finished our habitat unit in science. We took our food chain quiz today. We will be taking our trioramas home next week. We enjoyed making our trioramas.

LMC/Computer Lab - The library was closed during our normal checkout time due to the fall party and bookfair. We will have a checkout time next Friday. Computer lab this week we practiced our spelling words on Spelling City.

Mrs. McClung's News: School Pictures are coming home today. If you ordered please make sure that you have received them. Conference Notes are coming home today too! Please sign and return them as soon as possible. Please look for an e-mail next week if you were interested in helping in our classroom.

3M News

To my surprise this weekend, as I looked into my school bag to grade some papers, I found the students' progress reports. Sorry I forget to send them out on Friday. They will be coming home in backpacks today. Next week we will start our normal routine with our literacy block. We will be updating our blog on a weekly basis whenever possible.

Dear Parents,

Today we took a spelling pretest for unit 1. Your child’s take- home list was determined by the words missed on the pretest. If they missed more than two, they will stay on the base list for the week. If they did not, they will move to the alternate list. The students had to write their list down. I will send home the list this week, but from now on the students will be writing them down to bring home. You can find our lists on www.spellingcity.com Look for username: thirdgradebrookdale. You can also find the list on my blog.

To help your child really learn his/her spelling words each week, please encourage a routine for studying. Some students need only a few practices a week while others may benefit from daily or twice –daily practice. Included is a list of fun and varied practice techniques to keep handy.
